Katherine Filiss, 87 Owned Bungalow Colony
Katherine Filiss, a 12-year resident of Mars Hill, N.C., and a longtime
Monticello resident, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, after a brief illness. She
was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Costas and Sofia Poriotis, she was born August 13,
1913, in New York City. She was the widow of George Filiss.
At a young age, she and her family moved to Monticello where she spent most of
her life. Mrs. Filiss and her husband owned and operated a bungalow colony in
Monticello which became a summer haven for many Greek families. She moved to
Mars Hill, N.C., in 1988 to be with her son, Lionell, and his family. She
quickly made many dear friends there.
In a family statement, it was said, "Kay was a woman of integrity and she
instilled that value in her sons. She had a keen sense of humor, a quick wit,
and was strong and beautiful until the day she died. Kay did whatever had to be
done for her family, her friends and herself, never asking for anything in
return. All who were fortunate enough to have known her, knew her as Yia Yia — a
loving grandma. We will miss her."
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lionell and Mary Filiss of
Mars Hill, N.C., and Dean and Tish Filiss of Silt, Colo; 13 grandchildren; and
four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, George, a grandson,
Willie, and a sister, Zoie Puffer.
Services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home,
195 Broadway, Monticello.
Burial will be held in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello
