OBITUARY
Robert Carl Bendickson
29 AUGUST, 1922 – 3 FEBRUARY, 2021

IN THE CARE OF
Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home
Sadly, our Dad, Grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, Robert (Bob) Carl Bendickson passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday night on February 3, 2021 at The Residence in Mission (TRIM).
Robert was born in Wadena Saskatchewan August 29, 1922. His family moved to Mission in 1943 where he spent most of his time and raised his family. Robert is predeceased by his wife Lorraine, parents, John and Hilda Bendickson, siblings Pearl, Oscar, Helen, Carl, Nicolena, George, Wilma and half brother Melvin; daughter Delores, son-in-law Garnett Carrat, and grandson David; as well as many other beloved in-laws. Robert is survived by his sister Mable McRae, son Gary (Linda); and daughter Brenda Halpin; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Robert was known for a lot of things — such as a reliable and hard work ethic in the shake and shingle industry spanning some 45 years; for the look of joy on his face when he swung his partner around the dance floor whether it was square dancing, a waltz or the polka; his love for country and western music as well as the ability to play the fiddle, banjo and mandolin himself; for bargain hunter, garage sale guru and bingo player extraordinaire; and of course one can never think of Bob without marvelling at the speed he walked and distances he covered.

Sincere gratitude is extended to the many health professionals throughout Fraser Health (most recently TRIM), who have cared for Bob over the past eleven and half years keeping him safe and comfortable.

Due to COVID regulations a small service will be held at Mission Cemetery accommodating the limited number of attendees permitted.

Eulogy by Gary Bendickson

Robert Carl Bendickson is my Dad,

He was born in Wadena Saskatchewan in 1922, and while he never lost his love for "the Prairies", he spent over 78 years in B.C. Working more than 44 years, in the shake and shingle industry throughout the Province.

Everybody who ever met him knew he was different than anybody else they had ever met.

He was caring, generous, kind, active, and very stubborn. He never did anything a little, it was always full out and sometimes a little scary. His talent for collecting "things" is legendary. He never had one of anything. We always had a saying for him. If one is good just imagine how good 10 would be.

He did not like to haggle at his many garage sales. If you offered him less than he was asking he would not sell it to you, but if you showed him that you really liked something, he would give it to you for free. He was never accused of being the best businessman.

He had a full life and loved his family more than anything. He also loved square dancing, bingo, the Canucks, Saskatchewan Rough Riders, walking fast for miles, tearing down old buildings, playing music, and working hard.

He taught me a lot and makes me so proud for what he has left behind as we celebrate his life.

Heavenly Promenade – by Marie Hughes.

Circle right, allemande left,

Sadness leaves our heart bereft.

Promenade left do-si-do,

Dad has left this world below.

Star Promenade, and circle right,

Red curls combed and blue eyes bright.

Roll away to a half sashay,

He's gone to meet his bride today.

Pass thru separate then go home,

She's been waiting for so long.

Circle left and back to the right,

Her hair is combed, her heart takes flight.

Grab your partner and give her a twirl,

She sees him running t'ward his girl.

Do-si-do and weave the ring,

Rejoined at last, their hearts do sing.

Promenade right and round you go,

Her blue eyes shine, her face aglow,

Swing your partner around the floor,

She is dancing in his arms once more.

Our hearts rejoice with them.

Have fun Mom and Dad we will all see you soon enough.

A Tribute to Grandpa by Julie Halpin

Grandpa was a very special man and he was so many things to many people. But what stood out to me the most, especially as a young kid, wasn't our conversations, or shared interests, but the way he always found his own way to connect and communicate. He was a man of action. And he showed himself through what he did. Whether it was sweeping you away with his beautiful dance moves, creating winter wonderlands by a Christmas tree, or racing you up a hill (which us kids always lost against him). He had a beautiful soul, and he always found a way to touch the hearts of those around him, in his own Bob Bendickson way. I will say "I love you Grandpa and goodbye" with one of Grandpa's favorite ways to connect with us kids *Julie sticks her tongue out at Grandpa*
