Professional Basketball Player, Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Born in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, he played at the guard position for two seasons (1949 to 1951) in the National Basketball Association with the Indianapolis Olympians. A three-time All-American at the University of Kentucky, Beard helped lead the Wildcats to two consecutive NCAA championship titles (1948, 1949). He was a member of the United States Olympic Basketball Team that won the Gold Medal during the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. In 1951, he appeared in the first NBA All Star Game, scoring 6 points. He was banned from the NBA along with other players after being accused of point-shaving during his college years. During his NBA career, he played in 126 career regular season games, scoring 749 points with 551 assists. He died three days shy of his eightieth birthday.
