John Nelson Martin 95 passed away on April 30, 2016 at The Hamptons in Meadows Place, Texas. He was born on April 8, 1921 in Sistersville, West Virginia to Obed Stephen and Bessie Russell Varner Martin.

John grew up in Sistersville, West Virginia. He graduated with honors from Sistersville High School in 1939. After high school he worked in the CCC's in Las Vegas, Nevada as a Canteen Steward, was a Post Office Clerk in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and worked at Perfection Biscuit Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne, Indiana with honors where he received a BS in Chemical Engineering. He went to work for the Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas in the Texaco research and development department as a project chemical engineer where he worked for over 40 years.

John married Martha Sue Franklin in 1944 in Port Arthur, Texas. They were happily married for 71 years. John was a member of Heritage Baptist Church at his passing and was a former elder of Groves First United Methodist Church and First Christian Church of Port Arthur. He enjoyed tournament bowling, pitching on a softball team, stamp collecting, and studying his Bible.

John is survived by his spouse Martha of Meadows Place, Texas, his son Steve Martin and wife Peggy of Friendswood, Texas, his daughter Becky Martin Wood and husband David of Sugar Land, Texas, his daughter Jeanne Martin of Tomball, Texas, his sister Birdemae Farley of Paden City, West Virginia, his 7 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by parents, Obed Steven and Bessie Martin, sisters Meryl Greathouse, Mary Westbrook, Ruth Grohe, Selma Forsythe, Jean Gerwig, and brother Lee Martin. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., May 5, 2016 at Heritage Baptist Church, 2223 FM 1092, Missouri City, Texas. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at 9:30 prior to the service at Heritage Baptist Church on May 5.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 P.M. at Greenlawn Memorial Park 3900 Twin City Highway Groves, Texas 77619.
