US Congressman. Elected to represent Illinois' 6th District in the United States of Representatives, he served from 1975 to 2007. He also served as a Member of the Illinois State House of Representatives from 1967 to 1975, Republican Member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence from 1985 to 1991, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001, and as Chairman of the House International Relations Committee from 2001 to 2007. Hyde is best known for his impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton and his championed government restrictions on the funding of abortions. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor by President George W. Bush on November 5, 2007.
