Mary Anita Curtis, 61, of Crossett, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Portland, Arkansas, on April 14, 1960.
At the age of seventeen, her family moved to Crossett, where she resided most of her life. In 1978, she graduated from Crossett High School, later received an associate degree from Jackson State University, and worked as a devoted secretary for the City of Crossett Sanitation Department for fifteen years.
Mary was a very independent and strong-willed lady who stood firm on her principles. She had a big heart and was an incredibly proud grandmother. She was perfectly happy just sitting on her porch and talking on her phone. She never let her disabilities stop her. Mary was a fighter and fought the good fight to the bitter end.
She is preceded in death by her father, Willie Curtis; two sisters, Susie Curtis-Reed and Mabelean Curtis; and two brothers, James Woods and Billy Joe Curtis.
She leaves behind one daughter, Shakara Williams (Herburt) of Crossett, one son, Jamario Phillips, also of Crossett; her mother, Ida Mae Hayes, of Crossett; six brothers, Charles Woods (Earnestine) of Lake Providence, Louisiana, Clarence Culbreath, of Crossett, Terry Curtis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Herman Curtis (Henrietta), of Montrose, Roy Curtis (Shelia), of Crossett, and Troy Curtis (Margaret), of Kansas City, Missouri; along with two sisters, Bernice Sharp, of Rockford, Illinois, and Mattie Hardway (Joe), of Memphis, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Jorden Williams, Jayden Thurman, Jaedon Williams, Jhakera Williams, and Journne Williams; and one great-grandson, Karter Williams; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 4th at Westview Cemetery in Crossett, with Minister Falana Simpson-Hubbard, officiating.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Hospice Homecare and the Oak Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center for the exceptional care given to Ms. Mary.
