Ray was born in Anniston, Alabama on October 5, 1937 to Woodrow Wilson Lester and Minnie Iwilda Johnson Martin.
Ray was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Karen Raye Martin; parents, Woodrow and Minnie; sisters, Joyce Grant and Louise Marie Martin.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Donna Martin Wilson; companion of over 50 years, Melba Pope; and Melba's children, Wayne (Joann), Patricia, Teresa and their children and grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
