A loving husband and father. A community leader. A faithful friend. Robert "Bob" William Doane was all of those and more. Robert Doane passed away on December 23, 2014 surrounded by his wife and children.

Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Robert's life at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 16, at the Lemonwood Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 850 Johnson Drive in Ventura. He was born June 28, 1927 in Petersburg, Nebraska to Ivan and Louise (Mueller) Doane. Robert graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He joined the Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended the University of Kentucky and was a lifelong fan of their basketball team. He started working for Allied Van Lines in Chicago in 1952 and in 1955 he moved to Portland because he was promoted to District Manager. At the time he was the youngest District Manager working for Allied. In 1957 he moved to Southern California and in 1963 he joined Hilford Moving and Storage in Ventura. Robert spent most of his life working in the moving and storage industry. He was past President of the California Moving and Storage Association and retired as the President and CEO of Hilford Moving and Storage in 2003.

He was active in several service clubs including the Trade Club, the Boys and Girls Club and was past President of the East Ventura Kiwanis Club. Robert loved playing golf, spending many years as a member of the R&A Golf Club. He won major tournaments in Mesquite, Nevada and Palm Springs, gaining the nickname of "Desert Fox." He joined the R&A in 1981 and for the next 30 years his Thursday afternoons were dedicated to golfing with his buddies. He also enjoyed researching his ancestors and sharing the information he discovered with his extended family. His other pastimes was any sport that had a ball, photography, reading, playing poker with his buddies and playing Words with Friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his sons, Robert (Crow) Doane Junior and Steven Allen Doane; and his brothers Ivan Doane and Richard Doane.He is survived by his wife Pamela M. Doane; sister Doris Kasson; son Steven J. Doane; daughter-in-law, Donna Doane, wife of his late son Steven A. Doane; son John R. Doane and his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Barbara Doane and her companion Michael; step-daughter Lynda Arnold and her companion Ed; step-daughter Myra Brown and her husband Scott; step-son David Arnold and his wife Denise; step-daughter Kerry Thulin and her husband Timothy; step-daughter Sally Crain; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Robert and Pamela were married at the courthouse on September 15, 2004. They had a second marriage ceremony on the beach at Mandalay Bay on September 25, 2004, so they could share the occasion with family and friends.
