"John Robert Murrell, Sr.

Salisbury — John Robert Murrell, Sr., 91, of Salisbury, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Coastal Hospice At The Lake in Salisbury. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Howard Murrell and Frances Parker Murrell.

John was a US Army veteran and a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, Telephone Pioneers, and a former member of the Elks Lodge. He was also a founding member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, where he sang in the church choir for many years. He started working with C&P Telephone in 1951 as a lineman and later transferred to engineering, retiring in 1992 with Verizon. In his earlier years, he played county softball for J V Wells. He also enjoyed camping, attending his grandchildren sporting events and was an avid Baltimore Orioles and Delmarva Shorebirds fan.

John is survived by three sons, John (Valerie) Murrell, Jr. of Princess Anne, Timothy Murrell of Salisbury, and Dean (Patricia) Murrell of Parsonsburg; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother in law, James Tamosaitis, Sr. of Salisbury; and a sister in law, Joan Murrell of Jarrettsville.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Diane Hillman Murrell; and four siblings, James Murrell, Norma Brown, Eleanor Younger, and Paul Murrell.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 2:30 pm at the Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury with Rev. David Michaud officiating. The family is requesting that everyone dress in casual attire.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
