Obituary, published in The Daily Times (Salisbury, MD) on March 14, 2017 [via legacy.com]:

"Yates, Samuel Tolley

Salisbury, MD — Born on July 29, 1927 in Cambridge, MD, at 89 years old he went to be with the Lord peacefully in his sleep on March 9, 2017 at his residence of John B Parsons Assisted Living home.

He is the son of Edwin R. Yates and Helen Ruark Tolley Yates. He is survived by 2 daughters; a son; a step-son; 6 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a very special friend Karen Sallec of Salisbury who is a kind and very important person in Sam's life, and our family will always be thankful for the joy she brought our dad.

Most people knew him as "Sam." People from Hoopers Island knew him as "Tolley."

His deceased relatives were a sister, Marlene Crowe, who passed away at the young age of 24; step-daughter Terri Mills Hough; adopted son Charles Yates; grandson Phillip Tolley Yates; his wife of 40 years, Mary Lorraine Darby Yates, who passed away March 10, 1997.

Raised on Hoopers Island, MD, he graduated Hoopers Island High School in 1944. He worked with his grandfather at S.H. Tolley Seafood. He moved to Salisbury in 1953 and worked at Sunshine Laundry until 1957. He then worked for Baltimore News American Newspaper in Ocean City, MD. from 1959 to their closing in 1986. He also worked with his faithful friend Lehman Adam Seafood until 1993. His final job was with Benedict the Florist until their closing as "Sam the delivery man."

The family will always be grateful for the love and care the whole staff at John B. Parsons Assisted Living treated our father. Sam was a humble, jolly, man who loved good music, his children and friends, old cars, women, animals, sitting in the sun, Thrashers french fries, and any seafood were his delights. He had hope for a home in Heaven because of his faith in the Love and Mercy of Jesus Christ.

Per Sam's request, he donated his body to the Md. State Anatomy board. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to John B. Parsons Activity Department or a charity of choice. A memorial service will be Sunday March 26, 2017 at 2 pm at John B. Parsons Home, Salisbury, MD."
