John Leonard Smith - Peacefully on August 19th with his loving wife Alberta by his side as she has been for over 65 years.

Loving father of Dianne (Jim) Sanderson of Toronto, Carolyn (Doc) Roppel of Tiverton, and father-in-law of Sandra Smith of Whitby.

Much loved grandfather of Kerry Smith (Chad Pilon), Sean Smith (Meghan Biggs), Campbell Sanderson, Robert Sanderson, Jeff (Sara) Hamilton and Julie (Tory) Reid. Great-grandfather of Nicole, Branden, Kailynn, Bryson and Brock.

Loved brother of Jean Dent of Tiverton.

Predeceased by his son Gary, his sisters, Eunice Farrell and Christena Scott and brothers-in-law, Alan Dent, Murray Farrell and Bob Scott.

John was born in Melaval, Saskatchewan to the late Millie and Hugh Smith on January 14, 1924 and moved east with his family during the depression at age 13 to Tiverton, ON.

He enlisted in 1943 at age 18 serving with the BC Dragoons in Italy, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Returning to Tiverton, he farmed for the next 40 years.

In his "retirement" years, he became a master and prolific woodworker and furniture builder.

John lived a long and wonderful life rich with beloved family, friends and community.

He was guided by his solid values of his rural and patriotic roots. A humble but very humorous man, there was always a twinkle in his eye and a good word for everyone. His biggest joy was to lend a hand to others.

Visitation will be held at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home in Kincardine, on Thursday, August 21 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, Tiverton, where he was an elder on Friday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m.

Memorial donations to Knox Presbyterian Church, Tiverton or the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 183 Kincardine would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
