Actor. Born Edward David Asner, he was best known as Lou Grant on the "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" that aired in the 70s and 80s and a spin-off show called "Lou Grant." His career started in 1950 and ended at his death in 2021. For all of his hard work, he received 25 awards and was nominated 47 times for awards. The major awards he won were 5 Golden Globe Awards, and 7 Primetime Emmy Awards. From 1961 until 2012, he appeared in 70 films, most notably: "El Dorado" in 1967, "O'Hara's Wife" in 1982, "JFK" in 1991 and "Elf" in 2003 playing in the role of Santa Claus, the role he loved most to play. He did voice-overs for movies, television shows and video games, most notably as Carl Fredricksen in Disney-Pixar's "Up." His parents were Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Ukraine. His father was Morris David Asner and his mother was Lizzie Seliger. He attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas where his family had moved to and the University of Chicago. He worked on the General Motors (GM) assembly line and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. While there he was part of a touring group that performed all over Europe for the troops. He served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). He was very active and involved in many causes to include a movement to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and the movement to establish California One Care. He was married twice and divorced at the time of his death. He had 4 children.
