Memorial dedicated to Brian Woods:
"I was just hired by San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in 1991 and Brian was the supervisor of the engineering group I was assigned to. One of the day we, the whole group, worked overtime and stayed pretty late. When we took a short coffee break, Brian asked me to tell something about a country I've recently emigrated from. I've talked for maybe 20 minutes. The attention of the group was ideal. Brian, as usually, made a lot of notes in his Franklin Planner notebook , which he never left aside. When the break was over and my speech also, Brian thanked me and on the way back to the office politely asked, "Ark, what was the language you were speaking to us?" I, in the best traditions of famous Leo Scillard answered, "Why, it was Russian, of course!" Brian chuckled and said , " Well, we guessed it was Russian, but why, for God sake, you put so many English words into it?"

His sense of humor was kinda British-type-dry, a little bit caustic, and sharp. Never hesitate for a good repartee, for sure.

His area of interests spread from astronomy to sailing, from learning to play harp to Hiking long distances. A few months before his death when he already knew he got stage 4 cancer, he traveled to Chilie to watch Solar eclipse. He supported Old Vic Theater , famous Shakespearean theater in London. He had membership in British library and library of Congress. Last year he made a very long hike in coastal area of Great Britain. A few years ago-another very long hike in Spain ( I think, it was Spain).

A few times he went to Israel. Live in a kibbutz, travel around the country and was able to say his prayers during a fierce storm in a Sea of Galilea, and by the way, he was not intimidated of by the escalation of Palestinian terrorist attacks from Gaza. As he told me, it was fun to sit in the outdoor cafe, sipping coffee and watching how Patriot missiles are destroying rockets from Gaza just above him.

He liked classical music and periodically attended concerts by Pacific Symphony and concerts in LA. More than a 15 years ago he started to write a book about famous paintings depicting Adoration of Magi. He told me that he analyzed paintings by a few great masters on this topic and found some interesting feature, which, to the best of his knowledge was never discussed before. I don't know the fate of this book project.

Years ago every weekend ( or almost every weekend) he would take his telescope and drove to the Death Valley to watch the stars.

And of course he was respected as a very knowledgable engineer at the SONGS.

He decided to teach physics in public schools after he has retired from SONGS. And he did it. He even put the following bumper sticker on his car "Physics is phun!" And Smiley.
Humane, fun-loving, knowledgable person who always tried to light other people's lifs. RIP , Brian. I enjoyed working with you and to some extent knowing you. You were a unique person and will be missed.
