Jack was born in Corpus Christi and grew up on a farm in Gregory. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1952 after a three-year tour with the U.S. Army. Jack and Virginia owned and operated the McKenzie & Shell Insurance Agency in Corpus Christi for many years. Jack was an avid sailor in waters along the Gulf Coast. After retirement, Jack and Virginia embraced coastal cruising in their Grand Banks 36' power boat. They traveled from Corpus Christi, to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the Florida Keys, and up the East Coast.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Blanche Shell; and his brothers, Kenneth, Douglas, and Wendell.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Gary and wife Claire, and Glenn and wife, Amanda; grandchildren, Melissa Hronek and husband, Daniel, Meredith Emmons and husband, Chris, Mark Shell and wife, Morgan, Carolyn Harrell and husband, Danny, and Jason Shell and wife, Carrie; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Eli, and Owen Hronek; Walter and Eleanor Emmons; and Naya and Finley Shell.
During their time in Bryan-College Station, Jack treasured his fellowship with the congregation at First Baptist Church in Bryan. Memorials may be made to the church: 3100 Cambridge Dr., Bryan, TX 77802.
