JOYCE'S OBITUARY
LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Joyce Odell Parker passed away on August 27, 2021 at her home.
A loving wife and mother, Joyce is survived by her doting husband of 62 years, Charles L. Parker; her daughter, Jennifer Parker-Coleman and her husband, Randy Coleman; and her grand dog Gracie, all of Lancaster, SC. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Helen Melton and Betty Blackmon, and her two brothers, William Odell and Bobby Odell.
Joyce was born June 1, 1939, in Chester, SC to the late Ernest William Odell and Marie Gregory Odell.
Joyce was a graduate of Chester High School. Education was very important to her. After getting married, starting a career, and having a child, she returned to night school at York Technical College where she earned an Associate Degree in Accounting while working full-time. After a career change to a Buyer for Sun Chemical in Chester, she studied and pursued the designation of a Certified Purchasing Agent. In 1980, she was awarded the Business and Professional Career Woman Award. Earning a four-year degree was always important to her and in her 50's Joyce worked full-time and attended night school to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from Limestone College in 1996. Her drive for education is a testimony that if you have a dream, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it. Joyce retired from Rhodia Chemical Company in Rock Hill as their Office Manager.
Joyce's Christian faith was very important. She was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Church where she spent over 30 years teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, participating in the Woman's Missionary Union (WMU), and working Vacation Bible School. After retirement and a dream move to Little River, SC to live on the water, Joyce was an active member of First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. For the past seven years, Joyce had been living in Lancaster, SC where she was an active member of Second Baptist Church. She loved the members of her Sunday School Class Caring & Sharing as well as the 55 & Uppers. In retirement, the favorite part of her day was her quiet time and independent Bible Study.
The family would like to thank First Light of Lancaster for their support in care giving since October 2020. Their assistance allowed Joyce to remain at home throughout her journey with Primary Progressive Aphesia. The family is grateful for the care and support that Shay Clark, Janet Mullis, and Melody Lyons (among others) provided as they treated Joyce as if she were their own mom. A fact the family will never forget.
The family would also like to thank The Crespo's of Lancaster along with their two precious daughters for being the best neighbors anyone could have. Their selfless acts of kindness, especially during Covid, were special to witness. Whether playing sidewalk chalk games like hang man, reading books, hiding Easter eggs, or bringing Mrs. Joyce fresh flowers from their garden or kid's art for her refrigerator, they consistently found ways to provide her days with pure joy, and she loved them as if they were her own.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to perform a random act of kindness for a family who has a member suffering with a terminal illness.
Memorial donations can be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) at 2700 Horizon Drive, Suite 120, King of Prussia, PA 19406 or online at http://www.theaftd.org/ in memory of Joyce Odell Parker.
