Raquel Carames de Martinez passed away peacefully on August 19, 2021 at the age of 95. Raquel was born in Havana, Cuba, the daughter of Spanish parents who instilled in her a deep love for Spain. She emigrated to the United States with her husband and two children and was later joined by her parents and brother.
Raquel was lovingly called "Abue" by her grandchildren and their friends. She attended her grandchildren's swim meets at Memorial Pool, high school, and college and was known as an ardent cheerleader. She loved swimming and always watched the Olympics, rooting for the USA through the Tokyo Olympics. Full of spunk and curiosity, Raquel kept her mind sharp through Chinese checkers, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles. Her list of enjoyments also included Monk, chocolates, Hello Magazine, Frank Sinatra, theater, and travel. She visited numerous countries across five continents. Well into her 70's, she hiked through the Smoky Mountains, earning her the nickname "Rocky". In her 90's, she still joyfully accompanied her grandchildren on trips. She would playfully say "we bring the sunshine" on her travels, and she certainly did with her lighthearted spark and energy. She found beauty in the world around her and every person she met – a knack that likely contributed to her living 95 full years of life.
Although forced to leave so much behind when she left Cuba (family, friends, home, and all possessions), Raquel and her husband began a new life in a new country that she had previously only visited. She instilled in her children and grandchildren a deep attachment to family and stressed the importance of education. She emphasized that while material things are transient, what is important in life can never truly be taken away.
She is survived by her daughters, Mayda and Vilma, and her three grandchildren: Jacqueline, Christopher, and Rebecca DeLaFuente.
She was predeceased by her husband, Armando, her parents, Jose and Marina, her brother, Manolo, and her son-in-law, Richard, whom she loved like a son.
Raquel will be remembered for her quiet strength, boundless patience, and infinite capacity to love. She emanated grace, joy, and kindness and will be missed by all who knew her.
