Emma was born in Burgfarrnbach, Bavaria, Germany, the daughter of Johann Stephan and Wilhelmina (Augustin) Bauerlein. She was a WWII bride, married an American soldier, Robert (Bob) Marler. They had a son, Robert. In 1951, Bob and his dad immigrated to the USA by ship from Le Havre, France to New York City without Emma. Because of legal paperwork during the Korean War, Emma couldn't get out of Germany at the same time but came later that year. Marler's home and family were in Liberty, MO-part of Kansas City.

Emma and Bob Marler divorced in 1953-54. Not speaking fluent English, but needing to find a job to support herself and a young son, she was hired as one of the Elevator Operators at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City. It was her lucky day. At that time, John Blair was the head of personnel. Although he was on vacation when she was hired, she was summoned to come meet him when he returned to complete paperwork. As she tells the story, he began taking her elevator to and from his office every chance he got. They were married October 22, 1955. After their marriage, John adopted Emma's son and his name was changed from Marler to Blair.

John retired in 1970 and was diagnosed with lung cancer. He underwent successful treatment but the cancer returned seven years later and he decided to forego any additional chemotherapy. In 1977 with Emma by his side, the true love of her life pased away peacefully at home.

Emma volunteered her time in various ways. She was involved in the local Kansas City German Club, a volunteer at Research Hospital and a part-time nanny/house sitter for several Kansas City families. When the young parents would travel, Emma stayed in their homes watching their children; one family in particular--the Wilsons. Mrs. Wilson asked Emma if she was interested in meeting a very nice widower. An elderly gentleman and lifelong family friend retired from Westport Bank and now living in Kimberling City. After meeting and dating William E. "Bill" Severns in 1982, they married in July of 1983 at St. Andrews Chapel in Brookside (KCMO).

Bill and Emma made their home in Kimberling City, MO. from 1983 until 2000 when they returned to Kansas City. Bill died in 2005. On the evening of 19 August 2021, at the age of 94, Emma passed away peacefully with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.

Following her death and cremation, as they wished, John and Emma's ashes were buried together in Oklahoma City on 29 April, 2022, and will always remain "Together Forever".
