Mr. Walker was born August 21, 1917, in Zalma, MO, to the late Amos and Nettie Vance Walker. He served in the U.S. Army where he met his wife, Jean Gardner Walker, and in World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Mr. Walker and his wife moved to Vernon where they raised their family and he owned and operated a laundry mat. He was known as Papa to his grandchildren and great-grands, and was a friend to everyone he met. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Walker was also preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Jean Walker; four brothers, Ed Walker, Elvis Walker, Robert Walker, and Charlie Walker; and three sisters, Clara Salter, Cora Lloyd, and Stella Berrong.
Funeral services will be Sunday, August 29, at 3:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Vernon. Burial will follow at Furnace Hill. Visitation will be at the church, 2:00-3:00 PM, prior to the service.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy (John) Rowe, of Sulligent, AL, and Judy (Kenneth) Hattaway, of Vernon, AL: five grandchildren, Ricky (Lin) Minor, Stacy (Tony) Perkins, Gina (D.J.) Pitts, Jason Hattaway, and Jeffrey (Michelle) Hattaway; ten great-grandchildren, Justin (Courtney) Perkins, Jacob Perkins, Olivia Hattaway, Annslee Hattaway, Presley Hattaway, Houstin Advent, Dalton Advent, Tyler (Cassie) Smith, Haley Minor, and Andy Minor; and four great-great-grandchildren, Lawson Perkins, Bryleigh Perkins, Tatum Perkins, and Hunter Sean Smith.
