David Timothy Butts, Sr., 76, passed away early Tuesday, August 24th at Doey's House. Born on March 5, 1945 in Martinsburg, WV, he was one of seven children of Jack C. and Mary E. Butts. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1963 where he played basketball. He was named to the Blue Ridge Catholic League team for four years and earned recognition to the WV State Small Catholic Schools team.
Immediately following graduation, he went to work for the CIA in Washington, D.C. as a Clerk/Typist. He attended Shepherd College for one year and then enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve where he received an Honorable Discharge.
He married the former Judith Ann Harshman on August 4, 1967 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg, WV and they recently celebrated 54 years together. They resided in the Hagerstown area where Tim went to work for Potomac Edison (Allegheny Energy) at the R. Paul Smith Power Station in Williamsport, MD. He retired after 35 years of service as an Office and Stores Supervisor. Together they had three sons who were the light of his world.
For many years Tim refereed high school and college boys and girls basketball in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He loved the game and enjoyed staying connected in this way. He also refereed women's high school volleyball in Washington County. Tim enjoyed playing tennis with the Saturday morning group at North Hagerstown High School, as well as pickle ball at the YMCA. He was a member of the Hagerstown YMCA, the American Legion Post 42 where he served as the Chaplain of the Vietnam Veterans Last Mans Club, and the Hagerstown Elks Club.
Tim was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown where he previously served on the Parish Council, was a member of the choir, and served as Eucharistic Minister.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers – John (Jack) Butts, Robert Butts, and Michael Butts; and sisters – Brenda Plotner and Mary Susan Taylor.
In addition to this wife, he is survived by his children: David Timothy Butts, Jr. and wife Theresa of Exton, PA, Matthew Scott Butts and wife Rachel, and Jeffrey Lee Butts and wife Amy of Hagerstown. He was blessed with five wonderful grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Lauren, Megan, David, Logan and Gracie. He is also survived by a sister, Melissa Butts, of St. Francis, WI.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Doey's House or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown, Maryland.
A viewing will take place at Rest Haven Cemetery on August 26th from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Church on August 27th at 10am with a graveside service to follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.
