Janice M. Patterson, 87, died peacefully Saturday, July 16, 2016, in Baraboo, WI. A native of Rockford, she was born January 1, 1929, the daughter of Leslie R. Mac Dougall and Norma Eddie. She lived nearly her entire life there and her sister was Phyllis Mac Dougall Hyland of Rockford. Janice was a member of the first graduating class of West High School in 1946. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in journalism and communication, class of 1950, and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. On Dec. 10, 1954, Janice was united in marriage to Wesley H. Patterson, Architect, AIA, at the Second Congregational Church in Rockford. Janice was a devoted wife and mother, and was a member of the Rockford Women's Club, and an active volunteer and life-long member of the Second Congregational Church. She was a gourmet cook, an animal lover and bird watcher, enjoyed reading, telling stories, and painting and drawing. She and her husband were some of the first promoters of naturalized gardens and living spaces. They appreciated and preserved the native wild flowers and plants of their wooded neighborhood where she lived for 54 years. Janice was very proud of her Scottish heritage and loved the skirl of the bagpipes. Her mother's family, George and Annis Dyson, were pioneers in the Rockford area, Burritt Township, and first purchased their land in the 1840's. She was planning to attend her father's relatives' 115th Liddle Family Reunion this September in the Rockton area. Janice recently moved to Oak Park Place Independent Living in Baraboo, WI, to be near her daughter, Amy. She enjoyed her new friends in Baraboo, participating in the group activities, fieldtrips and exercise classes. She remained curious and was a life-long learner. Survivors include her daughter, Lisa (Thomas) Raterman of Chicago, IL; son, Robert (Laura) Patterson of Delavan, WI., and daughter, Amy (Steven) Anderson of Baraboo, WI.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth and Matthew Raterman, Gordon, Olivia and Cameron Patterson, Eric and Sarah Anderson; several cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends.
