Screven Men & the Otranto
A Virtual Cemetery created by: jrpv
Description: Screven County lost twenty sons when the HMS Otranto sank on the 6th of October, 1918; another twenty survived. Part of an Allied convoy, the Otranto was transporting troops from New York to Glasgow. As the convoy proceeded through a storm in the icy waters of the Irish Sea, the Otranto collided with another ship and sank. Of the more than 400 young men lost, many washed ashore on two Scottish islands, where they were buried. World War I ended a little more than a month later. After the war, many bodies were disinterred and sent home for reburial. Additionally, cenotaphs were erected at home for those who remain buried in Scotland, and for those whose bodies were never recovered.

Husband of Bonnie Cohens

Parents: William Allen 'Bill' Edenfield and Laura Deason
