He was preceded in death by his parents Troy Lee and Robert June Clowdus Darnell, as well as his sister Mabel Delores Darnell Parsons Mitchell "Tootsie", and his brother Kennith Lee Darnell.
He was a native of Bessemer, Alabama. He attended and graduated from Bessemer High School.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April of 1966, and served for two years, including time spent overseas in Vietnam during the Vietnamese War. A few of his decorations and commendations include the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, and the M-14 Rifle Expert.
Throughout his life, and to his dying day, he was so immensely proud to be a member of the USMC.
In his younger days, he was quite fond of local street drag racing, and owned several different hot rods - his notable favorite being a 1970 Chevelle SS 454.
He had a huge, compassionate heart for animals, and in his later years - if he was out running errands and such - he was quick to point out, "Time to get home and feed the cats!"
He retired from Jefferson County, where he worked as a road crew supervisor.
Mr. Darnell is survived by his son, Timothy Darnell; and nieces Sarah Kathleen Darnell, Stephanie Brook Darnell, and Jennifer Mitchell Fields.
Graveside service will be Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
