Susan Caroline Abbott, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, dog-lover and neighbor passed away on the morning of August 22, 2021 at the age of 68 in Gainesville, VA. She died peacefully, surrounded by her family after succumbing to cancer—a hard-fought battle through her will and love from her devoted family. Her kindness, charm, wit, charisma, generosity and most of all---selflessness, will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her lifelong partner and beloved husband, John, of nearly 50 years; her son, Dr. John Abbott and his wife Dr. Renee Abbott; her daughter Shelley Robey and her husband Nicholas Robey; her five grandchildren, Madeline, Jack, Perry, Blake and Trent; her sister, Joan E. Mather; her puppy Buffy; and an extended family of numerous and loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.

As proud natives of Virginia, Susan and John are devoted Hokie fans having met and married while students at Virginia Tech. She then pursued a career as a school teacher and administration staff for Fairfax County Public Schools, a career path followed by her daughter. Ultimately, she found her most meaningful career as a wife, mother and doting "Gigi" to her grandchildren. With family as a centerpiece, she was known to be an avid listener, mentor and confidant who had a love for tradition, holidays and gatherings with family and friends.

Susan is preceded in death by her brother, Capt. George Everett Perry, III; her Father Col. George Everett Perry, II; and her mother, Beatrice E. Perry.

Susan had a smile and laugh that lit up a room and brought joy to all who knew her—the years she gave us and lessons she taught us will be remembered, always.

Please join us on Friday, August 27 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home for visitation at noon, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. The Rite of Committal and burial will immediately follow at Fairfax Memorial Park at 2 p.m.

In recognition of her life surrounded by family, a reception will be held following the burial service at the Dominion Valley Country Club to raise a toast and thank Susan for a lifetime of cherished memories.
