He grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois and attended the University of Illinois at Champaign where he met his future wife, Roseann. Drafted into the Army, he was stationed in Connecticut at the Nike site on Avon Mountain where the Talcott Mountain Science Center stands today. After a wedding in Illinois, the pair settled in Connecticut, raised 5 children and were together for 63 years until the passing of Roseann in 2018. An avid reader of history and current events, John followed West Hartford town politics in his younger years, often attending town meetings, or helping out as a volunteer at the polls or organizing the absentee ballots. He also enjoyed hiking and cycling, planning many weekend trips hiking or biking the trails around the state with the whole family. John, spent his career working for the Aetna Insurance Company.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Brunetti) and sons Gordon, John, and Matthew and many grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his wife, Roseann; son, Stephen and son-in-law, Michael. His passing is a great loss to his family and friends. Calling hours will be Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 5 to 7 pm at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford.
