Lela, 86, a former entertainment editor whose daily column, "About the House" ran in The Beaumont Enterprise for twenty years, died Saturday at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Lela began her newspaper career as a feature writer in 1961 at age 40. Her beat, which covered the visual and performing arts, often took her to Hollywood and New York, where she interviewed stars John Wayne, Rock Hudson, Charlton Heston, Katharine Hepburn, Natalie Wood, Bette Davis and Lucille Ball, who invited Davis to dinner at her home on several occasions.
She once wrote that her three favorite interviews were with Billy Graham, Johnny Carson and the Maharaji.

Lela, a lifelong supporter of the arts, was married to the late Charles P. "Charlie" Davis, a Beaumont landscape artist. The couple had four children.
