Debbie Jean Wing, 68, passed away unexpectedly on August 3rd, 2018. She was born in Boise, Idaho on November 29th, 1949 to Hugh and Gloria Smith. Debbie spent her early childhood exploring the family's 160-acre farm in Garden Valley alongside her younger sisters and their beloved farm animals.
Debbie had a lifelong passion for education, beginning with her own as she attended Boise State University at the age of 16 and began her teaching career at the age of 19 as an English, Drama and Drill Team teacher. She went on to complete her Masters and Doctorate of Education at The University of Washington. Debbie greatly impacted many lives through the years as she worked in several school districts, including North Mason, where her own children attended school. Her talent for understanding kids, her constant tenacity for a better education, her vivaciousness, witty sense of humor and kind heart were a few of her many gifts that made her a memorable teacher, principal and superintendent.
Debbie leaves behind her loving husband of 33 years, Paul; two children and their spouses, Conor and Jillian Wing, Laura and Griffin Williams; one grandchild, Warren Wing; and two sisters, Kathy Smith and Dorian Deen, as well as many loved extended family members.
She had a desire to travel the world and experience as many cultures as she could. She was known to stop and talk to everyone she met – often giving out embarrassing, (to her kids), but proud facts about her family and children. She and Paul spent the later years of their marriage wandering the globe, filling their passports with stamps from over 50 countries. Debbie was also an avid reader, averaging 100+ books a year, which she diligently recorded in a journal. Over the years, she was involved with Rotary, The Boys & Girls Club, and founded the North Mason Scholarship Foundation, (previously known as Dollars for Scholars).
Debbie was the strong, intelligent and always playful matriarch of her family who brought her youthfulness as well as her wisdom and humor to family gatherings. She was known to break out the dance moves and often tried to teach her family old drill team moves. You'll always be on the b-e-a-m. Amongst all her credentials and accomplishments, anyone who knew Debbie knows her most honored accomplishments were her children and her family. She was incredibly proud of her husband, children, sisters, and most of all, her grandson.
"They lived and laughed and loved and left and the world will never be the same!" – James Joyce
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the North Mason Scholarship Foundation, in care of Laura Boad – 260 NE River Hill Drive, Belfair, WA 98528
A celebration of life open house will be hosted at the Wing family home on August 18th, from 1:00-4:00.
