On July 19, 1967, Officer Franke A. Story, ID #4238, was shot and killed along Highway 86, north of Imperial.
Officer Story and his partner, Officer Ernest H. Goff, were on the graveyard shift when they stopped a truck-tractor rig for a routine registration check. The driver of the truck-tractor grabbed Officer Goff's gun and shot both officers. Officer Story was killed instantly. Officer Goff was wounded, but was able to take the suspect into custody. It was determined that the assailant was driving a stolen vehicle.
Officer Story was 25 years old.
In 1996, State Highway 86, between the city of Imperial and the city of Brawley was designated the designated the "California Highway Patrol Officer Franke A. Story Memorial Highway."
