Michael was born on August 5, 1951 in Chicago to Bob and Bonnie Holmes.
Michael graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1970 where he was Vice-President of his senior class and stage crew manager, he was a proud Rough Rider.
Michael served in the United States Army as a Pershing Missile crewman while serving in Germany.
After returning home Michael started his long career as a master mechanic. He received his ASE certification. In later years he worked for AAA which allowed him to travel all over Iowa, always stopping in small towns to catch a ball game and learn the history of each town. Michael was a talented mechanic and he loved all things automotive.
Michael never met a stranger; he was always friendly and helpful to everyone. He loved life and was a proud father and grandfather. Music was his passion, he loved to DJ for family, friends and TRHS reunions. Michael loved the Iowa State Fair, Formula 1 racing, Cubs baseball and the Chicago Bears. He and Shari loved to travel around Iowa.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Sharon "Shari"; daughter Demelza Lee Holmes (Chris Ren) and their children Jaykub and Kaylee Ren and daughter Krista Michelle Duke (Chris) and their children Mercedes, Kingston, and Cassidy; brothers Ken (Lynn) Holmes of Iowa City and Fred (Monica) Holmes of Waukee. Nieces, nephew and many many dear friends. Michael cherished his family and friends and he was loved by all.
A committal service with Military Honors will be on Thursday September 2, 2021 at 2 pm at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. Please plan to join us on Saturday October 9, 2021 for a celebration of Michael's life to honor the man we adored. Bring your memories, photos and stories to share, Michael cherished time spent with family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be directed in Michael's honor to the Roosevelt Foundation or Suncrest Hospice WDM who helped provide loving care in his final days
