Helen-Lu and her beloved sister, Dee (Davis) Sudbury, grew up on the family farm in Davis Canyon farm where their mother raised over 3,000 chickens while their father farmed the land. She graduated from Lompoc High School in 1940 and San Jose Teachers' College (now San Jose State University), where she earned her bachelor's degree in Education with honors and her teaching credential in 1944. After WWII ended Helen-Lu was reunited with the love of her life, Donal (Andy) Ross upon his return from overseas. They were married on November 17th, 1945. Her first teaching job was in Orcutt, followed by a position at a one-room country schoolhouse in San Luis Obispo County while her husband, Andy studied engineering at Cal Poly. Helen-Lu and Andy moved to Sacramento for a brief period before coming back to Lompoc in 1952 where she taught elementary school for 28 years, retiring from Clarence Ruth. Helen-Lu and Andy raised their 3 sons on the family walnut ranch in a converted milking barn next door to her parents. Andy and Helen-Lu celebrated 54 years of marriage before he passed in 2000.
Helen-Lu was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lompoc where she acted as an elder, superintendent of Sunday school and enjoyed participating in the Women's Circle Bible study group. Helen-Lu was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association, TOPS Club, LHS Alumni and the Lompoc Valley Historical Society. She enjoyed working in her garden, watching and identifying birds, and taking drives to see the wildflowers in bloom. But above all, she cherished spending time with her sons and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Andy and their son, Paul, and daughter-in-law, Linda Ross (Charles). Surviving Helen-Lu are her sister: Dee (Davis) Sudbury; her 3 sons: Charles (Lompoc); David and his wife Virginia (Beavercreek, Ohio); and Wayne and his wife Doreen (Lompoc); 11 grandchildren: Chrysm, Helen, Mary, Steven, David W., Sabrina, Elizabeth, Jamie, Russell, Dewayne and Crystle; and 9 great-grandchildren: Charles X, Morgan, Brandon, Liam, Jane, Rita, Athena-Lu, Titus and Evan.
