Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 10 Mar 1899
"Ellsworth - Dr. G. W. Brooke, one of the most widely known physicians in the county, who has practiced his profession here for about half a century was stricken with paralysis last Saturday. The first stroke was not severe but the second rendered him unconscious in which condition he has since remained. It is thought he cannot long survive. The doctor is more than 70 years of age."
Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 17 Mar 1899
"Dr. George W. Brooke died at his home in Ellsworth last Friday morning at 1:30 from the effects of two strokes of paralysis suffered one week before from the last of which he never regained consciousness. Dr. Brooke was born in Goshen township, this county, April 29, 1828, and was therefore nearly 71 years of age. He began the study of Medicine with Dr. J. W. Hughes, a successful physician of Berlin township, in 1847, and graduated from the Cleveland medical college in 1851. The next year he located in Ellsworth which was ever after his home. The doctor was an ardent republican and took a lively interest in politics. From 1857 to 1871 he served in the house of representatives with great credit to himself and to the best interests of his constituency. He was one of the presidential electors in 1880 and cast his vote for Abraham Lincoln. He was frequently a delegate to National, State, district and county conventions, and was a member of the convention that first nominated Garfield for Congress. In 1863 he was appointed by the government as surgeon of the 12th Ohio Calvary, and saw much service on the field of battle. Dr. Brooke was united in marriage in 1852 to Theda A. Carter, the result of which union was four children: Ella, wife of Wm. Allen; Clara (sic Mary Q.), wife of Homer Williams; Georgie and Theda, wife of A. J. Graham, who died in a Pittsburgh hospital three days before her father. Mrs. Brooke died in 1874, and four years later the doctor married Mary E. Williams of Canfield, who survives him. To them was born a son, Syden (Sydenham) B. Brooke, who is at home. Dr. Brooke was a useful man in his community and his death is sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends. Funeral services held from the family residence Monday at 2 pm, were conducted by Rev. F. J. Cope of Salem. The interment was made in the Ellsworth cemetery."
