E. Elizabeth "Betsy" Hardesty was the daughter of Joseph Hardesty and unknown mother. She had siblings Joseph Hardesty, Jr. and Daniel Hardesty. Our oldest family records list her nick name, Betsy.

Elizabeth Hardesty was the third wife of Walter William Cox. They had 2 known sons. Their son, Virgil C. Cox, Sr. is also buried here. Son Walter Daniel Cox was born 6 Jan 1845 and died 28 Sep 1845.

The Walter W. Cox bible (owned at one time by his great grandson Joseph F. Buckler) lists our "Elizabeth Hardesty, the daughter of Joseph Hardesty, and wife of Walter Cox, was born 1811 August 2." It lists Walter and Elizabeth (Hardesty's) 2 sons Walter and Virgil. "Walter Daniel Cox, the son of Walter Cox, was born January 5, 1845. Virgil Crompton Cox, the son of Walter Cox, was born April 2nd, 1848. Walter Daniel Cox, the son of Walter Cox, departed this life September 28, 1845." It also lists Walter's other 2 wives (both Elizabeths) and their children (see photo of transcription).

Elizabeth (Hardesty) was on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Calvert Co., MD Census with husband Walter. Elizabeth was a widow on the 1880 census, with widowed step daughter Frances Cox (Mrs. Jas W. Buckler). This Elizabeth raised (2nd wife) Elizabeth Bowen Cox's 4 young children, Sarah Ann, Jeremiah Joseph, James Nelson and Frances Ann. Frances was born in 1841, the same year her mother died. Elizabeth's first son was born in Jan 1845.

On the 1850 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, dwelling #33, I found farmer Walter Cox, 40; Cox clan: Elizabeth, 40; Sarah, 15; Jeremiah, 13; James, 11; Frances, 9 and Virgil, 2, all MD born.

On the 1860 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found farmer Walter Cox, 49; Elizabeth Cox, 49; Frances Cox, 17; Virgil Cox, 12; farm laborer James Cox, 21 and Fredrick Freeman, 50, all MD born. They lived next 2 King families and her step-son Jeremiah and his family.

On the 22 Jul 1870 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found farmer Waller Cox, 60, $5K in real estate; Elizabeth Cox, 58; Mary E Cox, 11 and Rose Lee Cox, 7, all MD born. They resided next or near to Frances Buckler, 26, Jos F Buckler, 3; James N Cox, 31; (son) Virgil C Cox, 22

Husband Walter dies on 21 August 1873.

On the 1880 Dist. 3, Calvert Co., MD census, I found F. Buckler, a female 36; son Joseph F Bucker, 13 and (step) mother and widow Elizabeth Cox, 70, all MD born. They resided next to (Elizabeth's son) V C Cox and his family.

Her transcribed obituary in the Calvert Journal (from O'Brien's Calvert Co. MD Family Records, page 172) says: "Cox, Mrs. Elizabeth E, wife of the late Walter W. died on 29 Mar 1885 in her 77th year." She was buried on 31 Mar 1885. I suspect the 77th year is a typo.

Using the bible birth date, and gravestone death date, she is 73 years and 7.9 months old. This also matches the in "the 73rd year," on her gravestone. Teresa R. at the church says she died in 1888, not 1885, per church records instead.
