Adelaide Milton de Groot was a painter, art collector and philanthropist. She was the daughter of William de Groot, a ship owner employed in the China trade and his second wife Elizabeth King. In 1891, her family moved to Nice, France and remained there for nearly forty years. Some in her family were cousins; Frank Seymour Hastings, composer and photographer and his brother Thomas Hastings, the noted architect. They were the sons of Reverend Thomas Samuel Hastings and Fanny de Groot.
She donated over 200 paints to Metropolitan Museum of Art.
