Carrie was the second child but the oldest daughter of L.L. and Beret Jensine Gunderson. She was born in 1875. Her early years were spent in the Cumberland Wisconsin area. She went with her family to Michigan as a young lady where she met and married Oscar Lokke. They had two children, Albert and Carl, but were divorced in 1898. However, in 1902 she took her boys Albert and Carl and joined her father L.L. in Alaska. Here she became interested in local public affairs where she was appointed the Deputy Mine Recorder as well as the Postmistress of Shelton. She met and married Dr. Knute Gravem who had attended her father L. L. during his illness and death in 1903. They were married in 1906 at which time he took over the rearing and education of the two boys, Albert and Carl. They had two sons of their own and in 1917 located in Berkeley, California.
