CHESTER — Stephen “Smiley” McDonald, 62, of Chester passed away due to a motor vehicle accident on Nov. 6, 2017 in Morgantown.
Steve was born in Morgantown on Oct. 18, 1955 – the son of the late Harold Foster McDonald and Evelyn Elsie (Murray) McDonald.
Stephen was a 1973 graduate of Oak Glen High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served for 27 years as a Deputy Sheriff Sergeant in the Hancock Country Sheriff’s Department. Most recently, Stephen worked for the WV Lottery Commission.
An avid fan of baseball and music, Steve followed his Pittsburgh Pirates closely, loved going to games with his kids, and was always excited to show-off his favorite songs. In his free time, Steve put many hours into his genealogy research – always finding new family stories to tell. There was never a dull moment with Stephen. He could make you pee your pants laughing, and his smile was contagious. Most missed will be the silent moments with his children – between the laughter and stories – when nothing needed to be said at all. Dad could say more with his silence than most can say with words.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Alison (Harry) Board of East Liverpool; two sons, Stephen McDonald Jr. (Kerri Freshwater) of Weirton and James McDonald of Morgantown; a granddaughter, Bailey; two brothers-in- law, Kelsey Hayward of Chester and Scott Keranen of Chester; a sister- in- law, Robin Hayward of East Liverpool; nephew and nieces, Gary Hayward Jr., Analissa White and Sabrina Cheuvront; great nephew and niece, Landon and Mackenzie White; and also fiance, Lynette Mers of Huntington, W.Va.., and her three children.
Stephen will be laid to rest beside his late wife and love of his life, Loieta on Nov. 10th – Loieta’s birthday.
Along with his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law-Gary Hayward and a sister-in-law, Charla (Hayward) Keranen; and his mother and father-in law, Verna and Howard Hayward.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell, W.Va., where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017. Military services will be conducted by the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group.
Burial will follow in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, Pa.
