Susan Charlotte Tanner Thompson
Nov 14, 1952 - Aug 18, 2021

Susan Charlotte Tanner Thompson was born in Birmingham on November 14, 1952 to Malcolm & Charlotte Tanner. They raised her and her four siblings in the family home in Roebuck, on Callahan Road. She attended North Roebuck Elementary & Huffman High, before going on to study at Jefferson State. She married William Frank Thompson Jr in 1973 & they stayed devoted to one another over these last 48 years. She spent most of her working life at Eden Elementary in Pell City, relishing her time with the staff and students. Susan always said that her treasure lay in her parents, her siblings, and particularly her two sons & her four grandchildren – and in her Savior.
Susan was the kind of person you loved to see coming. So gentle and tender, yet tenacious when she battled and defeated breast cancer, beginning in 2012. Throughout, we were comforted when Susan said cheerfully, "it'll be OK." She persevered thanks in part to the prayers of folks all over Pell City, in particular the deep friendship she enjoyed with Eden Elementary principal Laurie Funderburg. Susan trusted Christ to look out for her through the operations, the chemo, & the radiation; & she saw her family as the vessel through which Christ often worked. She walked out of UAB, cured, so that she could nurture her grandkids. They knew well how easy Susan was to love.
Susan was preceded in death by her father Malcolm Leon Tanner. She is survived by her mother, Charlotte "Coco" Tanner; husband William Frank Thompson Jr; two sons Jason & Adam, & four grandkids, Jackson, Jesslyn, & twins Noah & Isaac; brothers David (Jeri) Tanner & Tommy (Joanna) Tanner; sisters Ellen Tanner & Janet (George) Prewett; & a host of cousins, nieces & nephews.
The family will receive friends at Deerfoot Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville on Sunday, August 22 from 5 pm to 7 pm. The funeral will be conducted on Monday, August 23 at 2 pm, at the funeral home. Graveside service to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate gifts to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama, located at UAB. 1802 6th Avenue South Suite NP 2519, 1932, Birmingham, AL 35294.
