Obituary of John Grover Kimes

John Grover Kimes, Sr. age 81 formerly of Piney Creek, N.C. died May 16, 2015 at home in Asheboro, NC.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Giles Chapel United Methodist Church, 1627 Giles Chapel Road, Asheboro, NC, with Rev. Yvonne Heckler officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Kimes was born in Cedar Falls, N.C. September 9, 1933 to George and Sadie Kimes. He was a member of the Grassy Creek United Methodist Church and after moving to Asheboro became a member of Giles Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Kimes was a retired member of the Greensboro N.C. Police Department. He served as a training officer while in the patrol division, later he was transferred to the detective division and served in the auto theft unit. He was a member of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators and the Southeast Chapter of Auto Theft Investigators. He also was member of the Greensboro Police Club and a member of the North Carolina Retired Peace Officers Association.

John also served in the United States Marine Corps and was a combat veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Inc. and a member of the Marine Corps detachment in West Jefferson, N.C. For his service John received the Korean Service Medal with two stars; United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; Good Conduct Medal.

John was an avid UNC Tarheel fan from 1955 and boasted that his twin sons were born the month of the 1957 NCAA championship with Kansas. He was also a loyal Atlanta Braves fan and scheduled his days around the ball games.

John was past president of the River Mountain Property owners association. He was past chairman of the Grassy Creek UMC P.P.R. committee, sang in the choir and served on other committees. In 2006 he received the Laity Service Award from his church.

Mr. Kimes is survived by his wife of 59 years Carrie Louise Kimes, sons John G. Kimes, Jr. and wife Lori of Greensboro, Roy T. Kimes and wife Carolyn of Cary and Richard O. Kimes of Trinity. grandchildren John W. Kimes and wife Melissa of Greensboro, Ashley D. Bunce and husband Jeremy of Thomasville, Alexandra C. Kimes of Greensboro, Catherine H. Kimes of Cary, Olivia L. Kimes of Greensboro, great grandson Chase L. Bunce of Thomasville N.C.
