Allen Varina Turner, 94

1929 - 2023

Swampscott - Allen Varina Turner, age 94, of Swampscott, died Wednesday in Salem Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Priscilla (Bartol) Turner. Born in Lynn and raised in Swampscott, he was the son of the late Anthony Turner and Anne (Varina) Gilbert. He was a graduate of Lynn English High School and had lived in Swampscott for the greater part of his life.

Allen served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked for First National and Edwards Supermarkets. He later worked as a custodian at the Swampscott Public Library, and for ten years at the Swampscott Middle School. He and his wife Priscilla were foster parents for 13 years, fostering 45 infants during that time. They also adopted three of their foster children. In his spare time, Allen loved playing cribbage and was an avid bowler.

He is survived by his children; David Turner, Debra Walsh and her husband David, Steven Turner and his wife Teri, Wendy Thomas and her husband Tim, Cynthia Vickers and her husband Andrew, Melissa Turner and Brian "B.J." Turner; his grandchildren, Sean and Keith Walsh, Nicholas Turner, Christine Gangi, Derek Anderson, Kaci Turner, Alexandria Thomas, and his great grandchildren, Caleb, Adalyn, Devyni, Aubree, and Aria; as well as his brother, Paul Turner. He is the father of the late Robert Turner and James Turner, and brother of the late Anthony Turner.

Service Information: A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 11AM in Swampscott Cemetery, Essex St., Swampscott. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
