Robert L. "Bob" Strickland
September 11, 1928 - August 14, 2021

Robert L. "Bob" Strickland, 92, passed away on Saturday, August 14th, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born to Jack and Mary Strickland on September 11th, 1928, the eldest of four children. As a teenager, Bob went to work as soon as he could, one of his first jobs being a lifeguard, as he was an accomplished swimmer. He also served as an usher at the Majestic Theater, sparking his lifelong love of movies.

After graduating from the University of Texas with a BA in Business Administration, Bob served in the Navy and was a Chief Petty Officer on the destroyer "USS Gunston Hall," where he helped evacuate Incheon. He left the Navy in May 1953 and returned to San Antonio and, along with his brother-in-law, Ken Clonts, built an oil re-refinery which he later sold.

Bob had a chance meeting with Elsie Neale at the legendary Hipp's Bubble Room on McCullough. Later, in 1961, they began a marriage that lasted 49 years before she predeceased him in 2010. Their passion for antiquing, travel, fine food, and history made them the perfect match. They built and furnished several homes together furnished with antiques from their many road trips to New York, New Orleans, and Round Rock. In addition, they enjoyed a beach house in Port Aransas that they beautifully decorated and frequented.

He was a parishioner of Christ Episcopal Church and was also a Mason, as a member of the Scottish Rite Temple.

Bob worked in the brokerage business, which he loved, with UBS and Merrill-Lynch, garnering numerous national sales awards over the decades. Never one to sit still, he even had a brief stint as a restaurateur in the 1970s as the proprietor of Jethro's on Rittiman Road.

After his retirement as a stockbroker, he channeled his energy into real estate and annuities. He enjoyed a lifelong love affair for strong coffee, fine food, biographies, classic movies and histories, and was dedicated to his family. Bob was a inveterate philatelist, with an expansive stamp collection that began in his childhood and lasted well into his later years. As a person, he would be best described as principled and forever curious. He was a living historian of all things San Antonio and was a permanent fixture in the dining room at the Liberty Bar.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; his parents Jack and Mary; his sisters Patricia Clonts and Geraldine Strickland.

He is survived by his children Bob Strickland (Martina Lee), Amanda DeMartino (Chris); his granddaughter Abbey; his brother Col Michael Strickland, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and many loving friends.
