Best Known Adair County couple Draw Happiness From Long Married Life

Receiving state-wide acclaim through a story written in one of the larger state papers, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Cornett of Chalk Bluff, both in their 85th year and having lived in matrimonial bliss together for 66 years of that time, still regard their lives as perfect examples of contentment. They were married in Sedalia, Mo., at the ages of 19 and have lived in Oklahoma since 1910. They have become one of the most widely known old couples in Adair County.

Known for her bounty to children, Mrs. Cornett draws intense happiness from seeing children about her, and from seeing them enjoy little gifts. Last Christmas she gave 200 presents to children of her community. And each year at Christmas she has a large numbers of quilts to give the Red Cross.

"My greatest joy in life is giving to children because they get so much pleasure out of it," Mrs. Cornett said, "and I have found more contentment during the past 20 years than any time in my life because Mr. Cornett and I understand each other more now than ever."

Although Mr. Cornett has farmed heavily during the greater part of his life, at the present time he has a small farm of four acres and for an income he operates a "neighborhood" store.

"During my eight years in business here most of the time people have been honest with me," he said. "As far as I am concerned right now I am spending the happiest part of my life. If people look at things right, old age is something to look forward to instead of dread," he said.
