Dorothy Eleanor (Wiltshire) Reed-Jackman was the second daughter of the late Bindley Ashton Wiltshire and Hilda Annetta (Jordan) Wiltshire, both of Barbados. Dorothy and her sister, Viola Thacker, were born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in the Sugar Hill section of Roxbury.
Dorothy, also known to her family and friends as, "Dotty", graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke High School in 1951. Soon thereafter, she joined New England Tel & Tel as a Long-Distance Ticket Clerk. She remained with the company until 1953 and then married her long-time friend, Richie Sloane. They gave birth to their first two children, Lynn and Bindley. She excelled at being a housewife, mother, and gracious host.
