Ramona Emily Lang Stearnes (August 24th, 1929 - August 13th, 2021) died peacefully in her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Although she lost her memory, she never lost her ability to find joy in each day, and until the very end smiled in the sunshine, laughed with her family, and truly embraced every moment.
Married at 18 to Harry Stearnes, their's was a romance for the ages. Ramona was an entrepreneur before her children were born, running a successful beauty salon in Wayne, Michigan, although her greatest role was that of wife, mother, and then grandmother and great grandmother. While she excelled as a traditional homemaker, she and her husband made business and financial decisions together. Their union was filled with great respect, love and kindness.
Ramona and Harry had a life of adventure, which included travel by plane (piloted by Harry), train, boat, and after retirement, by motorhome, traveling throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. Ramona also enjoyed a trip to Cuba with her friend Dolly, where she was serenaded with the song "Ramona," the influence behind her signature flower in her hair.
Ramona was an avid reader, trading bags of books with her friend Junie every week, for years. She loved singing and tapping her toes along with anything by Frank Sinatra, the crooners of the 40s and 50s, and to old classics like "Sunny Side of the Street" and "Mairzy Doats." In 2016, with her friend of over 80 years, Ilene Saunders, she attended a Tony Bennett concert in Detroit. Bourbon was her drink of choice, inspiring "The Ramona" to be served at her grandson's rehearsal dinner.
Through her father Edward's second marriage to Verna, Ramona learned that family has very little to do with blood, and her home was open to all for holidays, celebrations, or just an ordinary Tuesday. She entertained with ease, and created a home filled with love.
Never a raised voice nor sharp tongue, her life is an example of how to find the goodness in everyone and in every day. "Everything is coming up roses," was one of her favorite sayings, and whether that was true or not, she believed how you react to a situation was all that really mattered. She remained stoic, with her head held high, in all situations. She lived with style, grace and dignity until her last breath.
The family wishes to thank the support team who've been with us on this journey, including a long list of family and friends, and at the end the Brown Adult Day Care Program, the incredible team at Age with Grace, Angela Hospice, and Michael Krieger, who gave her the gift of music during her last years, recording special concerts which she enjoyed over and over and over.
