Mary E. Gibbs
November 9, 1936 - August 9, 2021
Carmichael, California - Mary Elizabeth Gibbs (née Barnick) left this world surrounded by her family on August 9, 2021, in Carmichael, CA. She was 84.
Mary was born on November 9, 1936, in La Fox, IL, to her parents John Richard and L Jean Elizabeth Barnick. She was the eldest of three siblings, with two brothers John and James. The Barnick family moved from Illinois to Southern California in 1947. Mary attended St. Rose of Lima grade school in Maywood, CA, and St. Mary's Academy (Yellow Tie) in Los Angeles for high school. In 1957 Mary graduated from St. Vincent's College of Nursing, Los Angeles, earning her degree in Nursing and becoming a Registered Nurse.
Three years after meeting on a blind date grunion hunting at Seal Beach, CA, Robert "Bob" and Mary Gibbs were wed on April 27, 1957. Together they welcomed their first of six children (Kathleen) in 1959. With the births of three boys - James (1962), Thomas (1963), and Michael (1964) - she smoothly transitioned into the role of "Matriarch." After relocating from Whittier in Los Angeles County to the Carmichael area in 1967, Bob & Mary welcomed into their family two more sons - Daniel (1969) and Brian (1980).
Mary was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother to her children and a caring friend to many. She volunteered at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School in numerous capacities: as Eucharistic Minister & Lector, head of the Altar Society and Ladies Guild, Health Screening Nurse, Room Mom, and B'Frienders Support Group. She loved music and was a skilled pianist and enjoyed reading, puzzles, crosswords, camping, boating, and fishing. Most days she spent time outside enjoying nature and her secret garden, and she would always look forward to getaways with Bob to their home in Soquel, CA, to be by the ocean. Mary was a longtime Oakland Raiders and San Francisco Giants fan. She loved to laugh and could remember amazing historical detail, both traits which she shared with her brothers. Over the past several months, Mary came upon ill health, dealing with cancer of the liver, yet she maintained her positive attitude about life.
Mary is survived by Bob, her husband of 64 years, daughter Kathy (Kevin), sons Jim (Cheryl), Mike (Lisa), Dan (Stacy), Brian (May), her brother Jim (Louise), sister-in-law Donna, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandson, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Thomas Joseph, and her brother John.
On Wednesday, August 18, a Visitation at Lind Brothers Mortuary, 4221 Manzanita Ave., Carmichael, CA, will take place from 4 - 8 pm.
On Thursday, August 19, a Rosary service and Mass will be held for Mary at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 5751 Locust Ave., Carmichael, CA, beginning at 10 am. A private burial at Calvary Cemetery will be held at a later time.
