XAVIA BATE CLARK, Castalian Springs, TN
Died at her home on January 3, 2014 with her family by her side. Mrs. Clark was born on February 8, 1929. She was the youngest child of William Brimage Bate, Sr., and Mary Baker Bate.
Her parents and siblings, Mary Rebecca Bate Shuford and William Brimage Bate, Jr. procede her in death.
She graduated from Gallatin high school in 1947 and continued her education at Fairfax Hall College in Fairfax, Virginia and Mills College in Oakland, California. She married her beloved husband, Avery Clark, Jr., on February 24, 1951. Mr. Clark proceeded her in death in 2007.
Mrs. Clark was an excellent wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a true southern lady.
Mrs. Clark is survived by three daughters, Linda Clark Freeze (Ken) of Jackson, Tennessee, Elizabeth Clark Boothe (Greg) and Mary Louise Clark Brown of Gallatin. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Katherine Robinson Hawkins (Eric) of Clarkesville, TN, Emily Robinson Perry (Wayne) of Jackson, TN, Mary Katherine Brown and Trey Brown of Gallatin. Mrs. Clark was especially proud of her two great grandchildren, Avery Katherine Hawkins and Sarah Margaret Hawkins of Clarksville, TN. "Gaga" was very much loved and admired by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as by all who knew her.
Throughout her life Mrs. Clark was devoted to her family, friends, the community and her church, first Presbyterian Church of Gallatin. For many years, she enjoyed involvement with her bridge club and the College Women's Study Club. She served her church through Sunday School, Circle, and the Women of the Church. She worked quietly and tirelessly for over 25 years to maintain and preserve the character of the gardens at Cragfont Historic Home.
Services for Mrs. Clark will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Gallatin at 2 PM. Visitation with the family will be held at the church from 12 noon until the time of service. Private burial will be held. Pallbearers include nephews, David Orr, Lee Stone and Jimmy Donohue; grandsons, Eric Hawkins and Wayne Perry and devoted friend, Randy Fulkerson. Honorary pallbearer is Mrs. Clark's best friend, Norma Jones of Gallatin.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Gallatin; Historic Cragfont or the charity of one's choice.
