Sean Gerszewski, age 18 of Grand Forks, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Sean Lawrence Gerszewski was born August 9, 2003, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Wayne and Tammy (Hollingshead) Gerszewski. Sean attended St. Michael's Elementary School, Schroeder Middle School, and Red River High School, where he would have started his senior year.

Sean loved sports and competition. He was a talented athlete, playing baseball, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, and track. Of these sports, Sean focused most of his time on hockey and lacrosse. He was two years old when he put on his first pair of rollerblades, and three when he started skating. Hockey was his first love, and on the coldest winter days he would round up anyone he could to meet at the ODR. He was a part of numerous teams that won many tournaments and state championships. Two of his memorable moments were scoring the tying "shootout" goal in a White Bear Lake tournament and achieving his goal of making the GF Aviators Bantam AA team just prior to his cancer diagnosis. When hockey season ended and he hung up his skates, it was time to lace up his cleats to play lacrosse. In the four years he played lacrosse, his teams never lost a state championship. This was a sport in which he truly excelled. As a 14-year-old in his final season of play (2018), he played on both the JV and Varsity championship teams, earning the 2018 JV Predator Award.

Sean had a way of being that attracted others to him, regardless of which school they attended, which team they played on, or which city or state they were from. He cherished his family and the friendships he had with his teammates and classmates. These friendships sustained him through his most difficult times. He loved his siblings and became their confidant. He enjoyed time with his cousins whenever it could be arranged. It was normal for Sean to become a "part of the family" of many of his friends. He took every opportunity, while he was able to do so, to spend time with friends at the lake, enjoy poker nights, movie nights, and hanging out whenever he could do so, even if it was just to get teas or lunch.

Sean was a good student, and really enjoyed the social aspect of being with friends during school. He had style, collecting many different pairs of shoes to coordinate with whatever he was wearing that day. He had a ready grin, could recite favorite movie lines in context with the current conversation, had a quick wit and dry sense of humor, and always wanted to have fun and laugh. While Sean's time with us was much too short, he lived his life to the fullest, celebrating every moment. He faced adversity with strength and courage and surrounded himself with incredible friends. He taught us the meaning of friendship, and reminded us to enjoy each day, love one another, be grateful for the gifts we are given and the time we have been granted, and to laugh often.

Sean is survived by his parents; brother, Brenden and sisters, Sophia and Aubrey, all of Grand Forks; paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Elaine (Sczesny) Gerszewski, Grand Forks; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Darrel and Marlene Hollingshead, and his cousin, Jakob L. Johnson.

Vigil services will be at St. Michael's Church in Grand Forks, ND, on Tuesday, August 17, 4:30 – 6:30 pm followed by praying of the Rosary and the Vigil service at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 11 am, with a 10 am visitation. Lunch will be served at St. Michael's Church immediately following the funeral services. A graveside burial service will follow the lunch at Calvary Cemetery South, S. Columbia Rd. (11th St. NE), Grand Forks.
