Death of Mrs. Magdalene Davis
One of Pittston's Oldest Residents Passes Away After a Long Illness
In the death of Mrs. Magdalene Davis, which occurred on Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catherine Anthony, in Oregon, Pittston loses one of her oldest and most widely known residents. Mrs. Davis has been in ill health, due to advancing age, for a long time, and for several weeks past her condition has been critical.
Mrs. Davis was in her 84th year, having been born in Neath, Glamorganshire, South Wales, in April, 1812. She was a daughter of Morgan Daniels, who came to this country with his family in 1832 and settled in Spring Brook.
A year later, the deceased was married to John W. Davis. The family resided in Carbondale, and in New York State, finally coming to Pittston in 1847. Since that time the family has lived here continuously. Mr. Davis was prominent as a stone contractor, and was successful in business, accumulating considerable property. He died on May 2d, thirteen years ago.
Ever since coming to Pittston, Mrs. Davis has been a member of the Welsh Congregational Church, and at the time of her death she was it's oldest member. She was most faithful in her attendance upon the church services, and in the support of the society generally, and was of sincere christian character. During her long illness, her chief solace were the numerous hymns and passages of Scripture which she had committed to memory.
Mrs. Davis is survived by the following children: Mrs. Catherine Anthony, of this city; Mrs. Mary Lewis, of Danville; Mrs. Thomas Davis, of Edwardsville; William J. Davis, of Wyoming.
