Donald "Don" Eugene Sherman, 90, of Sterling, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2021 in Sterling. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Don was born July 25, 1931 in Gothenburg, Nebraska to James William and Helen Grace (Fiddock) Sherman. He attended schools in Brady, NE, graduating from Brady High School in 1949. After graduating Don enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1949 until being honorably discharged in 1953 attaining the rank of Corporal. On February 11, 1955 Don married Mary Elizabeth Brown at North Platte, NE, celebrating 66 years this year.
After returning from the service Don started work at Armour & Co. in North Platte, NE, as an accountant/traffic manager. In 1967 He moved his family to Sterling where he took a job with Sterling Beef/Excel as Transportation Manager. Don left Excel in 1990 to take the same position at Beef America in Omaha, NE, where he stayed for 5 years. Upon leaving Beef America Don returned to Sterling in 1994 to be the Traffic Manager for Pancost Trucking until his retirement in 2001.
Don loved sports, playing basketball, baseball, and tennis. His High School basketball team even played for the Nebraska state title his senior year. He always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in their respective sports.
Don is survived by wife Mary E. Sherman, son Bill Sherman, grandchildren Travis (Leah) Sherman, Ryne (Lily) Sherman, Cara Wieser (Aaron), son Brad Sherman, grandchildren Melissa Feavel (Matt), J.D. Sherman, Sean (Shauna) Sherman, Joel (Traci) Sherman, son Jeff (Lori) Sherman, grandchildren Keli Meraz (Adrian), Kayla Sherman, daughter Becky Fritzler (Chris), grandchildren Kyle (Sarah) Fritzler, Ethan (Sadie) Fritzler, Kirstyn Fritzler, son Tom (Betsy) Sherman, grandchildren Justin Sherman, Kristen Sherman, Abby Miller, Kimberly Miller, 18 great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law Peggy Sherman.
He was preceded in death by parents James & Helen Sherman, sisters Marjorie Lindekugel, Margaret Rubenthaler, Mildred Dodge, and Edith Diehl, and daughter-in-law Tammy Mathewson.
