Stephen C Shipley was born on the 25th day of February, 1836 in Bennington, Licking, Ohio. He was a carpenter by trade. He married Hannah Melissa Isles in about 1861. They had seven children, being: Isom; Sarah Ellen; Marion; Martha; Bertha; Stephen G; and Thomas. All four sons were lathers by trade, with Isom adding some carpenter skills, too.
Stephen died the 28th day of December, 1898 in Newport, Madison County, Illinois. A coroner's report was filed at the time of his death. No disposition of his remains was indicated, but since most of his family members were buried in St John's Cemetery in St Louis City, it is probable that Stephen also rests in peace therein.
