In 1861 New York educated Frances Sawyer Newman married William Helm in Placer County California. She moved with William to Fresno County in 1865.

As her husband continued to succeed in each business he invested in, Frances, or Fanny as she is shown in the Census, began raising their large family including children Jessie, Mary, Francis, Maud, George, Frank and Agnes.

The block where Community Hospital now sits was once owned by her family and the Helm Building was one of her son Frank's successful business ventures. A true pioneer in the San Joaquin Valley.
