Today I began my three day pilgrimage to honor my mother and father. My Mom passed two years ago this week. I intended to scatter her ashes in the Sandia mountains on her birthday 2020. Covid lockdown started the very week before I was to set out to visit my Dad in Albuquerque and take care of her wishes.
I decided to add a few sites to our journey. Today I started where her New Mexico adventure began. Seventy five years ago, this British war bride stepped off the train at the Lamy, New Mexico depot. Even today I was surprised how remote it felt, with no cell service to be had. That Tottenham London girl, in her tweed suit and pumps, must have felt like she was on the edge of the world when she spotted the natives sitting there wrapped in their Indian blankets. I am still amazed at how brave she was.
I pulled into the parking area, turned off my engine and proclaimed, "Well Mom, we're here!" AND I KID YOU NOT, my rear passenger van door smoothly slid itself open! WOW MOM! That is some clever parlor trick you cooked up! (Note: No my doors have never opened themselves prior to this.) I took it as a solid affirmation that she was pleased with the destination. What an incredibly special moment. August 10, 2021 Barbara Emson, daughter.
