Burnt To Death Masterton
The house of John Harding, a quarter of a mile above the railway station, was burned down at daylight this morning. A spark from the kitchen chimney is supposed to have ignited the shingles. Three adults and eight children who were in bed at the time were all saved, excepting a boy of nine years, who was sleeping in an upstairs room and whos charred remains were subsequently found.

INQUEST Mr Wardell, R.M., in the absence of the District Coroner, held an inquest yesterday afternoon at the Courthouse on the remains of the lad Sydney Harding, aged 8 years.
A jury was empanelled, of which Mr M. Caselberg was chosen foreman. The jury having viewed the body.
JOHN HARDING: At about half past five this morning I was aroused by my son William, who informed me that the house was on fire. I immediately rushed downstairs while my wife went upstairs to call the family and on going to the pump outside the house I found the roof in a blaze. I then went to the front of the house and met my wife and children. I asked if they were all safe and my wife said yes, she thought so, but on looking round we missed Sydney. I then hurried upstairs but was driven back by the flames and smoke almost insensible. In the meantime, my son William had gone for the ladder and I then attempted to fain an entrance at the window, but found the fire had such a hold on the building that it was impossible to reach the boy. I have seen the remains which I recognise as those of my son. Before retiring to bed about ten o'clock, the fire was put out.
WILLIAM HARDING, son of the previous witness was called and said - I rose at five o'clock and lit the scullery fire and afterwards went to my mother's room asking about some butter; and on my return to scullery I noticed the roof on fire against the chimney. I then called my father and afterwards fetched the ladder for him.

Sergt McArdle stated on reaching the scene of the fire assisted in extinguishing the flames. Constable Connor finding the remains of the body, where were brought into Masterton.
This concluded the evidence.
The jury, after a short deliberation, said they were of opinion those were the remains of Sydney Harding and that he met his death at the fire, which was accidental.
